Exchange Gallery/Uderzenie sztuki

a meeting with Robert Jarosz
introduction to the Exchange Gallery and screening of the film
at WRO Art Center
May 11, 16:00-17:00

The Exchange Gallery/Exchange Gallery was founded in 1978 in the private flat of Józef Robakowski in Łódź. It was guided by the idea of a free presentation and exchange of ideas, works, energy, and artistic facts, free from geopolitical constraints, and unfettered by economics and censorship. Operating through a network of personal contacts, it became a place for exhibitions and speeches, film and video screenings, face-to-face meetings, and discussions. The Exchange Gallery was one of the most important venues for the independent Łódź and Polish artistic community of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s and its progressive contacts with artists from the West. The intensive international exchange, which lasted for several decades, resulted in the gallery’s collection and archive, which includes objects, photographs, art prints, films, and video works, among others.

Currently, Józef Robakowski has donated the archive and part of the Exchange Gallery’s collection to the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Robert Jarosz, the coordinator of the MSN Archive Team, is overseeing their processing and preparation for access.
